Japan, Severe Weather, Level 3: Heavy rainfall alert for Kagoshima – Japan

2025-08-08: The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a special heavy rainfall alert on Friday (8 August) for the southern part of Kagoshima prefecture, particularly in Kirishima City. Torrential rainfall over 24 hours in Kirishima City caused rivers to swell and heightened landslide risks. Authorities urged residents in Kagoshima City to evacuate or take precautionary measures as the risk of flooding increased. A landslide alert was declared for Kagoshima City, Kanoya City, Izumi City, Tarumi City, Satsumasendai City, Hioki City, Soo City, Kirishima City, Isa City, Aira City, Satsuma Town, and Yusui Town in Kagoshima Prefecture. Domestic flights at Kagoshima Airport (KOJ) were canceled.
Traffic disruptions are to be expected, floods and landslides are possible. Travellers should exercise heightened caution, especially near rivers and mountainslopes, and follow instructions by authorities.
