Japan, Tsunami, Level 3: Elevated tsunami risk following strong earthquake – Japan [Update 3]

Update 2026-04-20 (3): According to Japanese media reports on Monday afternoon (20 April, Eastern Time), the tsunami wave has already reached parts of the Japanese coast. A wave height of 70 to 80 centimetres was recorded in the port of Kuji (Iwate), whilst in Miyako the wave reached a height of 40 centimetres at around 5:10 pm.
Smaller tsunami waves are expected to reach Shimizu (7:17 pm), Nobeoka (7:22 pm), Sapporo (7:27 pm), Niigata (7:47 pm), Shimane (8:46 pm) and Nagasaki (9:02 pm).

Update 2026-04-20 (2): According to the latest information, arrival times for a Tsumai wave have also been issued for other areas: the wave is expected to reach Erimo and Urakawa (Hokkaido Prefecture) at 5:30 pm, and Tokachi (Hokkaido) and Mutsu (Aomori) at 5:40 pm (local time). Elsewhere, such as in Miyagi and Fukushima, wave heights of around 1 metre are expected.

Update 2026-04-20 (1): According to the latest information, a tsunami wave is expected to reach Hachinohe on Monday (20 April) at around 5:34 pm (local time). The tsunami is expected to have already reached the coast of Iwate by around 5 pm (local time). Initially, a wave height of 3 metres was forecast.
