Update 2026-07-28 (4): According to the latest reports, many people died and over one hundred others were injured on Tuesday (28 July) following the earthquake and prompted the evacuation of over thousands of people. Dozens of people were missing after a portion of a mall collapsed following gas explosion following the quake. Kumamoto Airport (KMJ) closed its runway, causing flight diversions and cancellations, while JR Kyushu suspended railway services. The quake caused power outages, damaged roads, collapsed a footbridge. The earthquake also damaged historic stone walls at Kumamoto Castle.
