India, Demonstration / Riot, Level 3: Fierce clashes between demonstrators and security forces in Kolkata – West Bengal, India

2022-09-14: According to the sources from Wednesday (14 September), hundreds of people sustained injuries while dozens were detained on Tuesday (13 September) following clashes between the security forces and the main opposition party of West Bengal during a protest against the State government across Kolkata, West Bengal. Reportedly, the security officials used tear gas, water cannons and batons after the protesters pelted stones and glass bottles on the former while the latter were obstructed from reaching the Secretariat in Howrah. Following the incidents, the Calcutta High Court has started an investigation and also ordered not to detain any people in connection with the rallies.
Heightened security measures and operations of security forces are to be expected. Violent clashes between protesters and security forces are possible. Travellers are advised to exercise caution, to strictly avoid demonstrations, road blockades, large gatherings, and deployments of security forces, and to follow instructions from security forces.
