Update 2024-02-20 (2): The protesting farmers, who gathered at Athens’ central Syntagma Square, have planned to leave on Wednesday (21 February) at around 11 am (local time) to return to widespread highway blockades throughout the country.
Update 2024-02-20 (1): According to reports, the Prime Minister withdrew his threat to ban the farmers’ protests on Monday evening (19 February, local time). As a result, hundreds of farmers are travelling from across the country to Athens on Tuesday (20 February) to participate in protests. Thousands of additional protesters are expected to arrive in Athens for the protests via chartered buses and ferries. Additional security forces have been deployed in order to help avoid disruptions to highway traffic.
