Venezuela, Complex Emergency, Level 5: Extensive damage and high casualty toll following severe earthquakes – Venezuela

2026-06-25: On Wednesday (24 June) at 6:04 pm (local time), two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale shook large parts of Venezuela. The epicentre was located 21 kilometres west of the city of Morón, 160 kilometres west of Caracas. International experts already estimate that the quakes may have killed thousands of people; the government has already confirmed dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries. However, these figures do not include casualties from La Guaira, where the most severe damage is expected. Carabobo, Miranda, and Trujillo have also been severely affected. Additional damage has been reported from the city of Caracas, as well as Bolívar, Aragua, Falcón, Anzoátegui, Lara, Táchira, Sucre, Delta Amacuro, Monagas, Guárico, Barinas, and Portuguesa. A state of emergency has been declared.
Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS) was closed due to damage, and the gas supply in some parts of the country was shut off for safety reasons. In addition, there are disruptions to telecommunications, and train service has been suspended in many areas.
There have already been numerous aftershocks.
